The Coast Is Clear For Ambode To Present 2019 Budget As Lagos Godfather Halts Impeachment

The threat to impeach the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode may have been dropped after the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who is believed to be the brain behind the purported impeachment move said that the governor will not be impeached.

Tinubu alongside other members of Governor’s Advisory Council, (GAC) met to resolve the rift between Governor Ambode and Lagos State House of Assembly.

After the meeting on Sunday which held in Marina, Lagos, the APC national leader stated there was no longer any question of impeachment of the governor.

The state lawmakers last week had summoned the over claim he misappropriate some money. They also issued threats of impeachment if the governor failed to clear himself of the charges.

But a group, PLA had last week demanded that the Lagos lawmakers account for N28.8 billion running cost allegedly collected under the leadership of the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa Should the House fail to respond to the allegations, PLA said it would use all legal instruments to compel it to do so. The LPA said these in a statement by its Chairman, Mr. Olu Fajana.

Tinubu while speaking to newsmen said the conflict between both arms of the state government had been settled amicably. He noted that while disagreements were bound to happen, the disagreeing parties should learn to employ conflict-resolution mechanisms.

“In the last one week, there has been noise about the conflict between the executive and the State Assembly. It is of great concern to all of us and particularly what Lagos represents across the country.

“We have been able to look into the source of various conflicts which is not uncommon in politics; what is the genesis of those problems? We are one big family and as a big family, you will have some rumples, you will have some disagreement. As leaders of the party, we have looked into that; we have looked into areas where we have to compromise, discuss and build the institutions, encourage the institutions to really do what is right.

“We have resolved there is no question of impeachment in Lagos State. Let the two arms of government communicate and continue to respect one another and build consensus and understanding. That is all about politics. Conflict and conflict resolution mechanism is inbuilt in any political system unless leaders are lacking in their responsibilities.”

Tinubu thanked the leadership of the State House of Assembly, Ambode and his deputy, Dr Idiat Adebule for coming to a consensus and bringing a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

“We thank the Speaker and the entire members of the House of Assembly leadership. We thank the Governor and the Deputy Governor who had demonstrated firm respect for the party leadership in Lagos State.

“You know when Lagos sneezes, the rest of the political equation catches cold and we are very happy that we are able to resolve amicably. The Deputy Speaker is also here and all of them put together, we are assured that things will start to run smoothly in Lagos both the House and the government,” the APC national leader said.

Key members of both the executive and legislative arms of the Lagos State government were in attendance. Governor Ambode, Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule; Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Mudashiru Obasa; Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Eshinlokun were all present at the meeting.

Lagos APC governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his running mate, Dr Femi Hamzat, were also present at the meeting.
