Creating The World We Want

By Eniola Daniel
Not all readers are leaders, but all readers who became  leaders have a common attribute; they are able to put their country on world map within a short period. President Barack Obama entered office in 2009 to fight the 2008 financial crisis. He immediately launched the ambitious Affordable Care Act, despite the backlash. His administration continued battling the Party Republicans after they gained a Congressional majority in the 2010 mid-term elections.

Despite these challenges, he accomplished many great things by the time his term ended in January 2017. Obama ended the 2008 Recession. In February 2009, Congress approved Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus package. In just seven months, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act pumped $241.9 billion into the economy. That increased growth to a robust 3.9 percent rate by early 2010. By March 30, 2011, almost all ($633.5 billion) of the funds were spent.
Obama modernized the Auto Industry. He bailed out the U.S. auto industry on March 30, 2009. The federal government took over General Motors and Chrysler, saving three million jobs. Obama was one of the few who turned around his country and create a better future Americans years for. It’s easy to get bogged down in our day-to-day lives, and reading elevates us above the daily grind. It can inspire us with stories of great accomplishments. It can give us new ideas.
Why do we read: 1 learn 2 escape 3 validate beliefs 4 know we are not alone 5 find new ideas 6 be inspired 7 learn to think 8 stay teachable 9 dare to dream 10 gain courage 11 strengthen convictions 12 learn to write 13 fall in love 14 stretch our mind 15 be tolerant.
This year’s world Book day celebration in Lagos, organized by the Lagos State Library board in partnership with iRead Mobile Library, which featured poet, poem, songs, drama, among others focused on the importance of reading to create a world everyone hope for.
World Book Day is an annual event by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. World Book Day was first celebrated on 23 April 1995, and continues to be recognized on that day. A related event in the United Kingdom and Ireland is observed in March 7.
Speaking on the event, the Director, Lagos State Library Board, Oyadipe A. Amoo, said, “we can see a lot transformation in the way some of these students have been responding, in drama, in poetry and all what they were saying is that, they don’t like the situation they were before…Today, it is better than yesterday which we believe that by the grace of God, tomorrow will be better than today so we are learning and improving to achieve the world we want today. The entire system in the society is improving .
On the availability of books for readers, he said, “there was no e-books in the yester-year, but today we have e-books, we have the internet. So we are improving on reading.
I came on board officially in June 2017 and after I assumed office, I initiated Lagos Reads which was embrace by my special advicer, we got approval for it and we have started it, it is already seated in the board.
When we started it, we are rewarding the winners of each book we selected from different categories of classes.
On the participatory level, Amoo who represented the Special Advised to the governor on Education, Babafela Bankulemo, said, “It was fantastic, we did it in August last year, but now we are in transition period so, it was suspended but by the grace of God it is already included in 2019 budget.
My advice to students is that they should keep on embracing reading because reading is transformation and gives you upliftment and it is also relaxing.  So it gives you enhancement. It is through reading that you can acquire a lot of knowledge, you know knowledge is power.
Speaking on this year theme, founder of the first innovative book on bills for children in Nigeria iRead Mobile Library, Funmi Ilori, said, “over time, we’ve been working on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and we realised that there are so many issues around  our world, but then we have dreams and the dreams is to create a better world, a green world to speak, a world that is free from pollution, a world that has a quality education for children, a world that has no poverty , a world that has a clean water and sanitation, so based on that we decided that if children needs to read, if adult needs to read, if we need to get more knowledge, let us engage in the world we want.
Authours are very important in celebrating the world book day, but most especially in the world we want, without authours,  we cannot get children or adult to read. Am particular about the children because they are the leaders, they are the people we are raising to ensure that the world is a better place. So the authours are the one that writes the books. We’ve gone from having hard copy books to soft copy books
The success for 2019 World Book Day is huge. We have over 1000 student in attendant, we have dignitaries from education sector. We have reach out to 4000 schools and communities, exchanging books for children every day.
On the partnership with the Lagos State government, she said, “the Lagos state library board is a very unique organization. Before now, I was selected by the Special Adviser on education to work on a project tag Lagos Read, we wanted Lagosians to read and the program was very successive in the few mouths that we ran it and based on the success, I approach the Lagos state library board to on the part we’ve played in the last two years organizing the World Book Day on our own;  when we collaborate with a large organization we expect more success and they were very open to that and they have made many things happen to make it a very successful day and we hope that the collaboration we continue.
We want to collaborate with more organizations.
