Group commends US for banning politicians who ‘undermines’ Nigeria’s democracy

By Eniola Daniel
The convener of Concerned Nigerians, Comrade Deji Adeyanju and the National Secretary of the group, Hauwa Abdulsalam have commended the United States government for banning some high profile Nigerians who played questionable roles in the last general elections.

It will be recalled that spokesperson for the Department of State, Morgan Ortagus, in a statement on Tuesday said certain individuals were acting with impunity at the expense of other Nigerians.

Ortagus said, “In a January 24 statement, the U.S. government said that we would consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process or for organizing election-related violence.

“To that end, the Secretary of State is imposing visa restrictions on Nigerians believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria.

“These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights.”

Adeyanju said, “We commend the United States Government on its decision to impose Visa restrictions on Nigerians who have undermined Nigeria's democratic and electoral process. For far too long these politicians have acted with impunity in a manner that has subverted the will of the Nigerian people, undermined the rule of law, and caused substantial loss of life and property of ordinary Nigerians.

“It is very comforting that the Nigerian people are finally seeing some sort of consequence being meted out to these class of politicians who are determined to destroy the very fibre of our society.

We appeal to the United States Government to extend this visa ban to officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Police Force who allowed the apparatus of the Nigeria state be used as tools of oppression against the people.

“We hope that in the future the United States Government will consider the seizure of assets and the foreclosure of business interests of Nigerians who actively undermine the nation's constitutional democratic process. He said”
