Calls for boycott of SA businesses in Nigeria, action, condemnation rages as Xenophobic attacks continue

By Eniola Daniel
It was a tensed atmosphere in South Africa yesterday as South Africans took to the street in Pictorial and smashed every known foreigner in the country, looted and in the process killing with cutlasses and setting some ablaze. The act led to many Nigerians calling for stiffer penalties and boycotting of all the companies affiliated to South Africa in Nigeria.
Xenophobic attack has taken the lives of about 116 Nigerians living in South Africa since 2016.
Speaking on the attack, Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Comrade Deji Adeyanju said, “I’m so sad over the attacks on fellow Nigerians in South Africa. The Nigerian government needs to step up to protect its citizens in South Africa. Please act fast to save lives.
I spoke to a friend in South Africa. He’s from Abia State. He relocated to SA in 2009 and worked so hard to build a business there. He employed seven South Africans and 4 Nigerians. He’s so scared to go out.
Human righ activist, Segun Awosanya said, “We once built a firm from the ground up in South Africa that provided employment opportunities for South African (Brandsworth). The team is still in SA as we speak but seeing what that country has become gives me the creeps. We need to make a stern decision. #ForeignPolicyNG
On his part, Henry Shield‏ who reacted to the attack on Twitter called on the president who since the heighten of the attacks yet to offer a solution or summon the SA ambassador to Nigeria,  to act, said “dear President Muhammadu Buhari, this is beyond your Minister for Foreign Affairs and SA Diaspora. You need to summon the South African Ambassador to Aso Rock immediately. Your citizens are being killed.
Ayo SogunroSouth Africans attacking immigrants think they are being clever. But they should ask those of us who have had independence since the 1960s for our experience on how politicians manipulate their people into attacking 'enemies' when they have nothing else to offer.
Damorela‏ said, “South Africans are taking Nigerian lives in South Africa, destroying and looting their homes, properties, businesses, and jobs. They've forgotten the role Nigerian and Nigerians played in the fight against apartheid and in the release of Mandela and their leaders. Ingrates
“Nigerians have accommodated other countries in the past and it never leads to unnecessary killings, see South Africa that just rise to prominence yesterday are now killing Nigerians because they want them out of their country.
A south African Mongezi Ndimande who condemned the attack, wrote, “This looting has nothing to do with drugs and stuff.  Innocent people suffer because of their foolishness. So what will destroying these shops help you with? a few weeks of eating butepo but in the long term you will have to ride taxis to go buy bread in town.
Mr Steford, South African owned companies in Nigeria are the most patronized among their equals e.g. MTN, DSTV, Shoprite, etc and Nigerians never hated or harm their people nor their properties. Stop killing/hurting your fellow Africans, we are one Africa stop #Xenophobia
Folajimi said, “South Africans should be ashamed, no wonder white people treat them like they are shit in their own country, the biggest companies in Nigeria is owned by South Africans, from DSTV to MTN to SHOPRITE, did we kill or attack anyone? #Xenophobia
Sir Nelson who called on Nigerians to return home, said, “ Dangote, Otedola, Adeleke and the rest made it here in Nigeria, from the streets, use your God-given head and the sky will be your starting point. Leave their country for them, protect your precious lives, Nigeria still needs you, your family still needs you.
“Most of those countries even maltreating Nigerians are low life countries that depend on Nigeria for survival but have the guts to do us anyhow because of the influx of Nigerians and some bad eggs among us. Nigeria has the population to accommodate your business, we are super smart people with keen eyes for business, why can't you look for your market population here and make your money? Instead of getting killed anyhow especially in SA or harassed in Ghana.
